法鼓山承辦「佛教的心靈環保」分論壇
全球佛教界的盛事「第二屆世界佛教論壇」，於三月二十七日至四月二日在海峽兩岸登場。三月二十八日在大陸江蘇省無錫市靈山開幕，三月三十日至四月二日移師台灣，四月一日閉幕式及祈福法會在台北小巨蛋舉行，預計將有逾萬民眾共襄盛會。.........(詳全文)

群英雲來集法鼓 三年有成興佛教
 本校舉辦第三屆考生輔導說明會暨宣布本學年（98）度招生免收學費
榮獲行政院環境保護署頒發「九十七年度推動環境保護有功」學校特優獎項，本校於十一月十四日上午，受邀參加台北縣環保局召開的表揚記者會，法鼓山代表果峙法師受獎時表示，感謝縣府環保局的熱忱推薦，以及環保署對於法鼓山推廣四環的肯定。而十一月二十一日環保署舉辦的頒獎典禮，則由副校長杜正民代表受獎，並於當天下午接受行政院院長劉兆玄的接見鼓勵。.........(詳全文)

Since September, it has been my great fortune to participate in the scholarly life at Dharma Drum Buddhist College (DDBC). I am a Ph.D. student in Religious Studies at the University of Virginia (UVA) benefiting from the special relationship between DDBC and UVA. DDBC has resources, not available at UVA, enabling me to make substantial progress in my dissertation research. In addition, I found confirmation at DDBC that life is really much better when it is lived without expectations, for it is without expectations that opportunities can best flourish...........(To see the detail)

Introduction to Tripitaka Editions at the DDBC Library
No.1: The Hongwu Southern Edition of the Ming Dynasty洪武南藏
In 1934 the last surviving copy of the Hongwu canon was discovered in a temple in Sizhuan. When the Chinese Institute for Buddhist Studies支那內學院 fled the Japanese army and relocated to Chongqing in 1938, the eminent scholar of Buddhism Lu Cheng呂澂 used the opportunity to study the edition. He found that the 678 函 boxes of the canon could be divided into a main division and a supplement (Box 591-678). The supplement contains many Huayan, Tiantai, Jingtu and Chan texts of Chinese authors that were for the first time included in a canonical edition. 2008.11.25 Professor Dawen Feng of the Research Institute of Religious Culture from Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, led a group of six to visit DDBC. In addition to a guided tour to the campus, the visitors met with President Ven. Huimin and faculty. 聖嚴師父之最後歸程與遺願
大悲心起，願願相續

 本校每學期一次，由創辦人聖嚴師父對全校師生做開示的「創辦人時間」，向來是師生引頸企盼的時刻，而今聖嚴師父捨報圓寂，師生們除了感傷與追思，更發願要循著師父的足跡，繼續完成 弘揚佛法、淨化世界的悲願。二月十七日的「創辦人時間」，由法鼓山方丈和尚果東法師，以「大悲心起，願願相續—聖嚴師父之最後歸程與遺願」為題，為全校師生同仁做開示。
首先，方丈和尚娓娓道出聖嚴師父近三個月的病況，他說，即使是臨將捨報，師父始終保持正念分明，平靜安寧，同時也珍惜生命中的每一分、每一秒，聽取弟子們關於推動弘化事業的報告。方丈和尚一再重申，今後法鼓山僧俗四眾將秉持師父的教理指導及法鼓山的理念，持續推動淨化人心與社會的使命，繼承師父的悲願，願願相續。
回顧一九八七年八月，在中華佛學研究所成立大會上，創辦人聖嚴師父語重心長地強調「今日不辦教育，佛教就沒有明天」。歷經二十多年的努力，從「中華佛學研究所」到「法鼓佛教學院」，不同的時空，不變的卻是師父一生堅持努力於佛教教育的大願心。而今，法鼓佛教學院即將邁入第三個年頭，緬懷師恩，我們只有秉持著以「弘揚漢傳佛教文化的精萃，孕育推動人間淨土的舵手」的創校理念，謹遵師父的諄諄囑託：「我今生做不完的事，願在未來的無量生中繼續推動，我個人無法完成的事，勸請大家來共同推動。」方丈和尚勉勵全校師生，要發起大悲願心，共同來完成師父未竟的悲心宏願，以報答師恩。
方丈和尚開示後，校長惠敏法師表示， 此後每學期一次的「創辦人時間」，將改為每學年一次的「董事長時間」，由本校董事長，亦是法鼓山的方丈和尚來為師生們做開示，關懷大眾。

第二屆「世界佛教論壇」登場
法鼓山承辦「佛教的心靈環保」分論壇

全球佛教界的盛事「第二屆世界佛教論壇」，於三月二十七日至四月二日在海峽兩岸登場。三月二十八日在大陸江蘇省無錫市靈山開幕，三月三十日至四月二日移師台灣，四月一日閉幕式及祈福法會在台北小巨蛋舉行，預計將有逾萬民眾共襄盛會。
第二屆「世界佛教論壇」由國際佛光 會、中國佛教協會、中華宗教文化交流協 會、香港佛教聯合會主辦，法鼓山佛教基金會、佛教慈濟慈善基金會、華梵文教基金會、台灣省佛教會、中華佛教居士會協辦。論壇主題為「和諧世界，眾緣和合」，盼藉由對話促進世界和平、凝聚眾緣祈求「世界經濟回暖、人民安定」、 「眾緣和諧、共生吉祥」，除邀請漢傳、南傳與藏傳等近六十個國家佛教團體領袖、學者及護法大德蒞臨參加，更分別就佛教的國際交流、宗派融和、心靈環保、 慈善關懷、藝文事業、組織管理、弘法傳播，以及佛教現代性議題，進行論文發表及深入討論。
法鼓山以推動四環（心靈環保、禮儀環 保、自然環保、生活環保）理念而著名，因此三月三十一日舉行的「佛教的心靈環保」分論壇，便由法鼓山體系的法鼓佛教學院負責籌辦。論壇主題以心靈環保、自然環保為主軸，共分為四個場次，發表論文三十餘篇，其中一個場次並以中、英、日語發表論文，現場進行同步翻譯。透過此世界性的論壇討論「心靈環保」的議題，對於法鼓山推動「回歸佛陀本懷、推動世界淨化」的理念到世界的平台，具有正面積極的意義。

群英雲來集法鼓 三年有成興佛教
本校舉辦第三屆考生輔導說明會暨宣布本學年（98）度招生免收學費

 本校二月十四日舉辦第三屆考生輔導說明會，這是自中華佛研所時期即保留下來的良好傳統，為有興趣報考的學子們提供應考相關資訊，並藉以認識學校環境、教學方式，研究方向。此次說明會約有百餘位考生參加，與會者反應熱烈，為今年招生活動掀起熱潮。
說明會在校長惠敏法師幽默的開場白中揭開序幕，校長首先就創校理念與辦學目標、學校特色、課程介紹、周邊資源、環境介紹及未來的展望等幾個面向做簡報，使與會考生對學校有一個概略性的了解及評估。隨後展開一系列的活動，包括參觀圖書資訊館、考情分析及座談會。考情分析由高年級同學擔任主講，透過生動活潑的簡報設計、穩健的台風及幽默、精闢的分析，使考生能準確掌握考試的方向，展現了同學們的用心及經過一年學院校風熏陶的學養，為考生們做了良好的身教。
此外，為了讓立志「成佛作祖」 的人才，都能夠在無後顧之憂的情況下，鑽研佛學、精進修行，校長宣布本校本學年（98）度招生將免收學費，而如為出家眾身分就讀者，雜費亦全免。事實上相當著重人文與科技 整合的校長惠敏法師，每年也都會提供每位研究生一萬元的資訊設備請購補助。另外，本校還有包括李春金先生、談子民先生、菁英入學等獎助學金，幫助成績優異的學生們順利完成課業。
說明會最後與考生座談，分別由校長惠敏法師、副校長杜正民老師、教務組組長見弘法師、學士班系主任果暉法師、推廣教育中心主任蔡伯郎老師、資訊組組長洪振洲老師等擔任與談人，針對考生提出的問題做回應， 整場說明會在歡喜和諧的氣氛中圓滿。

【第二版】校長Tea Time
寂滅為樂

 最 本校創辦人聖嚴師父於二○○九年 二月三日圓寂，遺言︰
在我身後，不發訃聞、不傳供、不築墓、不建塔、不立碑、不豎像、勿撿堅固子。……。務必以簡約為莊嚴，切勿浪費舖張，靈堂只掛一幅書家寫的輓額「寂滅為樂」以作鼓勵……
其中，「寂滅為樂」之句，應可作為所有佛教研修者的共同目標。今於此略論此句之相關典故與禪法，與諸同仁同學共勉，彼此增進學業、道業，願願相續創辦人的辦學事業，以期能報師恩。
「寂滅為樂」的典故
它源自於《大般涅槃經》等經典「諸行無常，是生滅法，生滅滅已，寂滅為樂」 偈語，佛陀並對比丘們說明︰「汝等當知，一切諸行，皆悉無常。我今雖是金剛之體，亦復不免無常所遷。生死之中極為可畏，汝等宜應勤行精進，速求離此生死火坑，此則是我最後教也」。
根據《雜阿含經》五七六經：佛告某一天子，阿羅漢所說「一切行無常，是則生滅法，生者既復滅，俱寂滅為樂」，勝過忉利天上「歡喜園」之樂。此外，北本《涅槃經》也有記載，釋尊過去世入雪山修行，為「生滅滅已，寂滅為樂」半偈，捨身於羅剎。
「寂滅為樂」的修行
菩薩若能如實觀照身心的剎那生滅，進而悟入真如無生無滅之寂滅性（無生法）而不證，則是「無生法忍」，這是大乘深義的特色。我們若能學以無所得為方便，由聞慧（音 響忍）、思與修慧（柔順忍）、 修與現觀慧（無生 法忍）而趣入般若，能由悲願熏 心，或許可以此「寸草心」，報答師恩三春暉於 一二。

謝清俊教授受聘為本校名譽教授
曾伴中華佛研所成長 將助本校佛學資訊課程更上層樓

 中央研究院研究員謝清俊教授受聘為本校名譽教授，校長惠敏法師於一月二十一日親自致贈聘書予謝教授，自九十七學年度第二學期（九十八年二月一日）起生效。
本校為借重學界及教界內之優秀教師，提昇本校師資陣容及教學內涵，於本學年第二次校務會議（九十八年一月七日）中通過「本校名譽教授敦聘辦法」；校長隨後提名謝清俊教授為本校第一位名譽教授。經九十八年一月九日系所級教師評審委員會，及一月十九日校級教師評審委員會中，二級二審通過，經校長核定後敦聘之，並於一月二十一日致送聘書。
謝教授為交通大學電子研究所博士，歷任交通大學、台灣科技工業學院（今台灣 科技大學）教職暨行政主管職；自民國七十二年至中央研究院擔任研究員迄今，並自七十二年起至七十九年間，籌設電子計算機中心並擔任籌備主任。
謝教授與本校之因緣甚深，自本校前身中華佛學研究所時期，即共同成就電子佛典計畫、數位圖書館暨博物館計畫 等；本校籌設以至成立過程中，以及佛學資訊組之設立等均給予有力之幫助與建議，目前亦擔任本校佛學資訊組課程委員之一。
謝教授大半生致力於研究工作，對於佛典數位化亦有卓越之貢獻，佛學資訊課程為本校特色之一，期盼謝教授加入，使本校在此領域的發展能更上層樓。

學習札記

|
好願、行願、滿願 ◎蔡淑慧（研究生）
 這些年來，對於能在如此殊勝的法鼓山觀音道場，擔任漢藏班的中文教席，以及每週一次雲裡來去，在這無處不美、萬物皆法的吉祥地，成為惠敏法師「三學精要」課程的學生，學習佛法，增長智慧；尤其能參與每年一次的水陸法會，體受那不可思議的妙用，個人深深合十感恩。
聖嚴師父說：「為自己祈一個好願，為 眾生發一個大願，以行願來還願，圓滿所有的願。」能有這樣的福緣，確是多年前在祈願觀音殿，許願、圓滿的結果。
還記得佛研所漢藏班畢業典禮上，聖嚴師父殷殷垂詢西藏法師們的中文學習，在知道學生們能親近中國《論語》、《孟子》之智慧寶藏後，他那歡喜放心的神情。
而今，大家長遠行了，期許自己不忘教誨，緊緊追隨，更加精進努力，更珍惜目前擁有的美好。
山路是永無止境的 ◎康吉良（研究生）
 參與這次禪七，有幾點讓我印象深刻。首先是這裡的齋食，著實讓人感受到義工們護法的用心，想到自己何德何能受到如此的招待，心中實在感恩！記得有位義工分享時，哽咽地說：「希望大
家未來能夠做救苦救難的菩薩！」那殷切的聲音至今仍迴盪心底！
禪修第三天，安排到山上的茶園體驗戶外禪，從禪堂走到室外，走向微陡的山坡，我不經意地抬頭往上看了一眼，晴朗的天空一片湛藍澄澈，彷彿就像自己清淨無染的本性，找不到一抹白雲掠過。是啊！我們正要回到那一片湛藍中，回到我們的自性本來，那個屬於每一個人該回到的地方！雖然這一條山路有些陡，但旅途已經啟程，腳步是踏實的，心中是感恩的，看著走在前頭的一列身影，認真地邁向這條回歸自性的解脫道，有一種堅定的感動。
到了山上回頭一望，原來那山不僅在腳下也在對面，層層疊疊佇立眼前，聖嚴師父說：「美妙的桃花園，桃花終究會謝呀！」所以還是得回到人世間下山走這條菩薩道，這條山路是永無止境的，一山還過一山，相信願力會帶著我們向前！
猶記有一次聆聽聖嚴師父開示，他老人家提到，發大願的菩薩是不會捨下眾生一個人走的，聽到這裡，自己毫無預警地流下淚來，想到 師父拖著衰微的病體都是為了我們，而今他已盡了最大
的力陪我們多走一段，而自己⋯⋯是否真的成長了？

本校受教育部委託舉辦「宗教研修與性別平等教育」座談會
|

 二○○八年十二月十七日，本校受教育部委託，舉辦「宗教研修與性別平等教育」座談會，針對宗教學校推動性別教育提出檢討與建議，也透過宗教間的對話，釐清宗教信仰普遍存在的性別迷
思。
校長惠敏法師於開幕時表示，宗教教育強調人際間的平等對待，因此性別平等教育的推展更具指標意義。本次座談探討「宗教研修與性別平等教育之面面觀」、「宗教學校推動性別平等教育之經驗與展望」等議題，除邀請性別平等教育專家與談，台灣神學院、輔仁大學神學院、一貫道崇德學院籌備處等宗教學校代表也參與討論，教育部高教司科長蔡忠益先生也到場聆聽各方意見。
在宗教與性別教育面面觀的議題上，台北教育大學教授莊明貞、清華大學副教授李玉珍、實踐大學副教授葉至誠，分別從性別意識、戒律實踐、教育政策等面向作探討。儘管論述主題不同，但他們一致認為，建構一個性別平等的社會，與宗教教育的根本精神是相輔相成的。
台灣神學院助理教授石素英、華梵大學副教授賴玉菁則提出性別教育的推動經驗與展望，石素英並以神學院女學生和女牧師人數逐年成長為例，說明宗教學校性別平等教育的突破與成效。
本校與會的學生表示，透過與性別教育的連結，為既有的宗教思維開啟了新視野；台灣神學院學生黃雅慧也回應，這場座談的舉辦，顯示宗教學校已開始關注性別議題。透過座談，人人都能成為論述實踐的主體，落實性別平等教育。

 為二○○八年十二月四日至六日，本校副校長杜正民率領圖書資訊館館長馬德偉、資訊組組長洪振洲至越南河內科技大學參加「太平洋鄰里協會二○ ○八年會暨文化地圖協會、日越地理信息聯盟聯合會議」（PNC 2008 Annual Conference and Joint Meetings with Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative and Japan- Vietnam Geoinfomatics Consortium），會中共有來自美、英、日、泰、台灣等十九個國家，一百多位學者發表論文。
本次年會的主題為「Information Technology for a Sustainable and Creative H u m a n o s p h e r e 」， 針對文化地圖 （Cultural Atlases）、人文地理資訊系統（Humanity GIS）、數位檔案／典藏品（Digital Archives／Collections）、數位圖書館（Digital Libraries）、電子數位文化（e-Culture）與電子數位化資源 （e-Resource）等主題進行討論。
杜副校長規畫主持了「整合型佛學數位 資料庫（IBA）」的場次，延續去年「數位佛學研究國際會議」的跨國合作成果， 持續整合梵、藏、巴利文等藏經系統的工 作，並與歐美的佛典資料庫做一連結。此外，副校長亦分別於PNC及ECAI場次發表論文Buddhist Lexicographical Resources and Tripitaka Catalogs──towards an International Buddhist Archives Network 以及Using GIS and Culture Records in the Development of Taiwan Buddhism Database。
太平洋鄰里協會（ T h e P a c i f i c Neighborhood Consortium, PNC），為一區域性研究社群，自一九九五年成立以來，即著重數位資源的推廣，期許透過會議平台，整合太平洋沿岸地區國家的電子研究資源，促進彼此的資訊交換及流通，並分享數位研究成果與經驗傳承。

 由於法鼓山多年來致力推動環保工作、帶動社會風氣，備受各界的肯定，中研院推薦兩位訪台的美國耶魯大學教授John Grimm與Mary Tucker至法鼓山參訪，一月十三日由邱黃海教授陪同，連
袂蒞臨。兩位教授在環保領域有專精之研究，他們表示一個宗教團體能全方位落實環保的理念，讓他們留下了深刻的印象！
在校區的導覽中，副校長杜正民首先介紹圖資館，並解說心經影壁。兩位學者十分肯定法鼓山在環保之外，佛典數位化的成就，稱許是現代的玄奘大師。他們對於園區中生物的多樣性，保留老樹、維護原生樹的作法，以及全面禁用農藥、基地保水、廣場道路的透水設計、照明節能與熱能運用等，也給予高度的肯定。
觀摩環保工作之外，兩位學者也就世界宗教的發展與本校師長交換意見，校長惠敏法師並致贈CBETA電子佛典一套作為交流，圓滿此次參訪。

廣東中山大學比較宗教研究所榮譽所長馮達文教授率領該校教授等一行六人蒞校訪問，除參觀校園外，並會晤校長惠敏法師及本校老師，雙方就未來兩校間合作項目，如學生及教師的互訪等事宜，進行交流討論。

副校長杜正民與圖資館館長馬德偉、洪振洲老師至越南河內科技大學參加2008 年太平洋鄰里協會（The Pacific Neighborhood Consortium, PNC）與文化地圖協會（Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, ECAI）聯合國際會議，除於該會議中規劃佛學數位典藏資源整合（Integrated Buddhist Archives, IBA）小組討論會場次外，並於PNC場次發表多篇論文。另外，於ECAI場次發表論文與展示使用地理資訊系統及在台灣佛教資料庫發展中的文化紀錄。本次會議共有十九個國家的代表參加，總計有二百一十一位相關領域的專家學者與會。

上海師範大學法政院哲學系方廣錩教授蒞校訪問，並發表學術演講，講題為〈敦煌遺書與佛教研究〉。方教授是著名的敦煌學佛教學者，著作非常豐富，有《中國寫本大藏經研究》等二十多種，論文二百餘篇，以及主編《藏外佛教文獻》等，同時也是電子佛典的先鋒。在二小時的演講中，方教授嶄露了真學者的研究熱情與利他無我的情懷，全場聽眾浸淫於教授生動有力且
頗具學術深度的演講，透過圖片解說，縱橫古今，在時空交錯更迭中，提供研究者對敦煌佛教文獻，不同角度之思考方向，亦對敦煌古文物的歷經滄桑，不勝唏噓。

Without Expectations, Opportunities Flourish By Louis-Dominique Dubeau

 Since September, it has been my great fortune to participate in the scholarly life at Dharma Drum Buddhist College (DDBC). I am a Ph.D. student in Religious Studies at the University of Virginia (UVA) benefiting from the special relationship between DDBC and UVA. DDBC has resources, not available at UVA, enabling me to make substantial progress in my dissertation research. In addition, I found confirmation at DDBC that life is really much better when it is lived without expectations, for it is without expectations that opportunities can best flourish.
Before I came to DDM, I was told to expect the food to be bland because of the absence of onions, garlic and other spices we are so fond of in the West. I am happy to report to anyone who asks that the food at DDM is delicious. I was also informed that I should expect life to be boring on the mountain. Again, I can say that life on the mountain is far from boring. DDM provides the ideal environment for the practice of meditation and for performing serious scholarly research without being distracted. If I were to become weary of meditation and research, I could just listen to the soothing sound of murmuring trees or babbling streams. After having experienced DDM for myself, I can confirm what I intuitively knew already: I should not expect anything but let life manifest itself without forecasting what my experience will consist in.
One afternoon, I pulled away from my research and came out of the college to find people lined up along the path to Master Sheng Yen's residence. I was able to immediately apprehend the situation without having to ask anyone: Master Sheng Yen had passed away. His vision of international cooperation translated into the opportunity for me to come to DDBC. Unhindered by expectations, this opportunity in turn generated further opportunities: I met with international scholars and participated in the 水陸法會, for instance. These opportunities generated further opportunities, which are now generating further opportunities, and will continue to generate further opportunities in the future. Master Sheng Yen's initial vision is flourishing into a garland of endless opportunities. Thus is the truth of Master Sheng Yen's great vow: “The universe may one day perish, yet my vows are eternal.”

Introduction to Tripitaka Editions at the DDBC Library No.1: The Hongwu Southern Edition of the Ming Dynasty洪武南藏

 In 1934 the last surviving copy of the Hongwu canon was discovered in a temple in Sizhuan. When the Chinese Institute for Buddhist Studies支那內學院 fled the Japanese army and relocated to Chongqing in 1938, the eminent scholar of Buddhism Lu Cheng呂澂 used the opportunity to study the edition. He found that the 678 函 boxes of the canon could be divided into a main division and a supplement (Box 591-678). The supplement contains many Huayan, Tiantai, Jingtu and Chan texts of Chinese authors that were for the first time included in a canonical edition. Why was this edition almost forgotten?
The Hongwu canon is one of three Ming dynasty Tripitaka editions that were printed on imperial decree. The larger part of this canon was carved and printed over the course of 26 years (1372-1398) during the Hongwu period, the supplement was added on imperial order during the Jianwen period (1399- 1402). Most of the work took place at the Jiangshan 蔣山寺 temple in Nanjing. In 1408, soon after the completion of the supplement, all woodblocks vanished in a fire. Very few print copies were made. The rediscovery of the last remaining copy at the Shanggu 上古 temple is a great fortune.
The Hongwu canon contains 1600 scriptures in more than 7000 卷 fascicles in 678 函 boxes. The word “Southern” in the Chinese title is not quite appropriate - there is no Northern edition of the Hongwu canon. The main division – Vol. 1-204 in our edition – of the Hongwu canon is an exact copy of the Qisha 磧砂 edition, including the box numbering and the characteristic apparatus which provides pronunciation glosses for difficult characters at the end of each fascicle. The edition in our collection, published 1999-2002 has 242 volumes. It is a facsimile, black and white reproduction of the Sizhuan copy, commissioned and funded by Buddhists from all over China and Taiwan. The images were digitally enhanced. Unfortunately the catalog contained in Vol.242 is only rudimentary and does not map the texts to the original box division or to other editions.

Silent Illumination Retreat By Andres（張其偉）

The best retreats of DDM:
1) Pine Bush N.Y. has the best retreat scenery
2) Gold Mountain, Taiwan has the best retreat “magnetic field”
3) San Yee has the best of the retreat meals.
This is the first time I have ever been any where in Taiwan besides Taipei. Before I came to Taiwan for my study, my friends told me that Taiwan offered the best snacks and food but when I had the first meal here in San Yee, I must say it was the best and healthiest vegetarian meal I ever had in my life.
After I put my luggage away in the dorm, I came down to the dining hall and started my meal. “My Buddha, how can a chef make the rice so soft and so yummy？” I continued to my next round and found out they’re all organic. This is the first time I ever realized my body actually is sensitive to organic food. After the meal, I felt I could digest faster and felt so energetic!
On the second night, when we were doing the food offering at the evening service, there was a part that we needed to recite: “Fan Fan Fan Fan Fan⋯” in my mind, I replaced it with “飯.飯.飯⋯” Instead of concentrating on the chant, my scattered mind pulled me away to contemplate the delicious dishes at the dining hall. I ought to say that I’m still an ordinary being with lots of vexations.
There was a time when 果鏡法師 asked us to face each other then suddenly she decided to do the prostration repentance in front of everyone! I was shocked as, even though she was late, I didn’t think she needed to do that. This has made me realize she indeed is a great practitioner with no duality and treats herself no differently than the others.
During this retreat, Shi Fu explained the Silent Illumination method very clearly and taught us how to deal with the method at different stages during the practice. Besides the method teaching, he also taught us crucial Buddhism concepts so we are able to use them as a supplemental method. At this retreat, I felt so at ease compared to my previous ones. I also found my awareness and clarity expanded not only to my hearing but also to my sight as well. There were times I could see very clearly without wearing my prescription glasses; this is amazing because I didn’t know that meditation could also correct eye sight. I also realized I can better adapt to my environment/ conditions whether it be good or bad. For example, during the last two days of the retreat my leg was in a lot of pain, but I felt I was able to breathe smoothly and still be mindful of my method. This never happened before.
Overall , I really enjoyed the retreat. As the best way to appreciate the Three Jewels I will take one elective course next term and be more diligent in my practice. Finally, I wish for all sentient beings to be separated from suffering and may all vows be fulfilled.

Professor Dawen Feng of the Research Institute of Religious Culture from Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, led a group of six to visit DDBC. In addition to a guided tour to the campus, the visitors met with President Ven. Huimin and faculty. Issues of further cooperation between the two institutes, e.g., faculty and student visits and exchanges, were discussed during the meeting.

Vice President Aming Tu, Dr. Bingenheimer (Director of the Library and Information Center), and Dr. Hung made a trip to Hanoi University of Technology, Vietnam, for a joint international conference of The Pacific Neighborhood Consortium, PNC, and Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, ECAI. They conducted a session entitled , “Integrated Buddhist Archives, IBA” and presented papers in the PNC section. They also demonstrated the application of a GIS cultural tracking system for the Buddhist Database of Taiwan. The conference hosted 211 participants from 19 countries.

Professors John Grim and Mary Evelyn Tucker of Yale University visited DDBC. Both scholars are experts in environment protection. President Ven. Huimin introduced our green buildings and environment-friendly approaches to the visitors.

A special mission committee from Fu Jen Catholic University, consisting of Fr. Louis Gendron S.J. and Fr. Frank Budenholzer, visited President Huimin to discuss DDBC's experiences in academic administration and the pros and cons of establishing a religious study institute. The two Fathers are considering founding a new Catholic college.

Ven. Xuecheng , Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China, accompanied by his secretary, Ven. Xienjie, and Lu Xuen, chief editor of Dharma Voice, the Journal of the Buddhist Association of China, made a visit to Dharma Drum Mountain World Center for Buddhist Education. Ven. Guojing, Director of CHIBS and the Center for Practice and Study in DDBC, briefed the visitors about recent events.

“The TELDAP International Conference 2009” was held in the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences of Academia Sinica. The conference program, which began February 24th, was designed by DDBC. President Ven. Huimin, Vice President Aming Tu, Assistant Professors Marcus Bingenheimer, Jen-jou Hung, and William Magee served either as panelist hosts or gave lectures during the conference.
