History

The forerunner of the Dharma Drum Buddhist College was the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies (CHIBS), established by Venerable Sheng Yen in 1985. For sixteen years the library of CHIBS was located on the premises of the institute in Beitou. In 2001, the CHIBS library was renamed the Library and Information Center and conjoined with the Buddhist Studies Information Network Center. In the same year CHIBS relocated its campus to Jinshan near Taipei. The current library building was opened on March 6, 2002 and library services were extended to the general public.

In 2006, CHIBS successfully applied to the Ministry of Education to establish Taiwan’s first private Buddhist College – Dharma Drum Buddhist College (DDBC). On April 8, 2007, faculty and staff of DDBC convened for the inauguration of Taiwan’s first accredited institute dedicated to academic and spiritual education in the Buddhist tradition. The DDBC Library and Information Center provides high quality services on-site and on-line through advanced library systems such as ALEPH, Metalib and SFX. In 2007 the library joined the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), and the Digital Archives Section became a member of the TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) consortium.

Library Holdings

The Library and Information Center of DDBC is a research library specializing in Buddhist studies. Our library houses over 50,000 volumes and subscribes to 518 current periodicals, making it one of the largest Buddhist Studies collections in East Asia.

The Library and Information Center holds one of the world’s largest collections of canonical editions. We own more than 50 editions of the Buddhist Canon in various scripts and languages: Chinese, Tibetan, Manchu, Sanskrit, Pāli, Japanese, English, Thai, Burmese, Khmer and Dai, amongst others. We have an extensive collection of precious palm-leaf manuscripts from Burma, and in 2008 acquired a large microfiche collection of Tibetan texts, including the Library of Congress PL480 collection and various Kanjur and Tanjur editions. We provide access to all digital editions of the Buddhist Canon such as CBETA, SAT, TBRC, ACIP, CSCD, etc. In addition to these Buddhist Studies tools, we provide the electronic version of the Siku Quanshu, BAS bibliography databases, e-Journal databases such as JSTOR and ProQuest Religion and other services.

Our long-term collection development plan is to collect all available editions of the Buddhist Canon, as well as to continue expanding our holdings of scholarly works on Buddhist Studies in Chinese, Japanese and European languages. The Digital Archives Section of the library will continue to digitize Buddhist texts and objects, establishing digital collections to make Buddhist texts available to the wider public.

Plans and Prospects

Alongside the develpment of the collection, our plans for the future include the furthering of our collaboration with other libraries and archives under the auspices of the Integrated Buddhist Archives initiative (IBA), and working on a platform for distance education in Buddhist Studies. Our ultimate goal is to become one of the foremost libraries in the field of Buddhist Studies and in that capacity to serve international and domestic academia as well as the educational institutions of Dharma Drum Mountain.
