360° Tour of the Campus

Location of Dharma Drum Mountain

DDM is located on Taiwan's North Shore not far from the town of Jinshan at Sanjie Village. It is nestled among mountains facing the sea. Dharma Drum Mountain rises from the oceanside to a height of 200 meters. The nearby beachfront is known as the "Emerald Shore." Two freshwater streams run all year long down DDM to the ocean. To the left a blue mountain lifts its dragon's head; to the right the mountain scenery appears like the lowering head of a Tiger.

Origin of the name of DDM

When our Founder, Venerable Sheng-yen, first observed this mountain, it reminded him of a passage from the Lotus Sutra: "May the Superiors turn the Supreme Dharma Wheel ... and play the Great Dharma Drum ... to develop the Profound Teaching." He used the name Dharma Drum Mountain to inspire him to become a dharma drummer, spreading the teachings of the Buddha to benefit sentient beings, and also because it reminded him of the three sprits of the Bodhisattva Way: activity, diligence, initiative.

Educational Facilities

Our College buildings are nestled into the terrain of the mountain. The Educational and Administrative Building pictured here houses classrooms, faculty and staff offices, and large and small meeting halls.

International Conference Hall

Our International Meeting Hall is designed to be a modern high-tech conference facility, allowing for multi-media presentations with simultaneous translation. This Hall is used to host large domestic and international academic conferences in order to promote research and dialogue about Buddhist Studies.
