Dharma Drum Buddhist College was established by Venerable Doctor Sheng Yen, the renowned founder of Dharma Drum Mountain World Center for Buddhist Education. The antecedent of the College was the “Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies” established by Dr. Sheng Yen in 1985. In 2006, the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies successfully applied to the Ministry of Education to establish Taiwan’s first private Buddhist College. On April 8th, 2007, the faculty and staff of DDBC convened Taiwan’s first accredited single-religion study institute dedicated to the academic and spiritual education of Buddhists. DDBC strives to combine the rigorous educational discipline of a top-flight academic institution with an emphasis on the study and practice of Buddhism. Our six active principles integrate tradition and innovation:
DDBC's goal is to attain a key position in academic Buddhist studies. We attract international scholars, engage with Universities in Taiwan and abroad, and promote scholarly interactions through publishing and international symposia. To encourage research, DDBC has amassed what is perhaps the finest Buddhist library in Taiwan, renowned not only for its size and depth, but also famous for its technological expertise, implementing digital projects such as CBETA—serving the Chinese Buddhist canon to the world. In the future, DDBC will be complimented by Dharma Drum University to provide students with an environment that combines Buddhist practice with an excellent secular education. Students may elect a single major field of study or decide to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Our goal is to train modern professionals to offer social service within a religious motivation. DDBC is proud to sponsor the XVIth Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, June 20-25, 2011. This academic conference is the premier international forum during which scholars of Buddhism may present their findings.
